The National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code, also known as NFPA-101, specifies in Section 7.9.3 on the Testing and the Maintenance of self-testing/self-diagnosis emergency lighting equipment. It mandates that the self-testing/self-diagnosis emergency lighting equipment to perform the 30-second monthly and the 90-minute annual tests, as well as visual inspection and the recording of the visual inspection.

For the visual inspection, all that is required is for an individual to walk around the facility and look to see if the LED indicator light is flashing rapidly. If the indicator light is solid green, the tube has passed the required test. If it is flashing rapidly, the emergency tube needs to be replaced. Note this in your audit records as “visual inspection passed.”
